Merlin’s Story

By TerrieLynn Bach

Last October, a Bastrop County animal control officer was called out to a local business that had some rental housing on their property. One of the renters had been evicted and left behind twenty unfixed cats that were living in and around her house!

If animal control had to take all those cats in, some friendly and some feral, some healthy and some sick –and not a one spayed or neutered, they likely would have been euthanized. Instead, Bastrop C.A.T.S. was contacted to help.

The business owner worked with us to get all the cats spayed/neutered and vaccinated and necessary medical issues were taken care of. The business gave Bastrop C.A.T.S. a generous donation to help cover the cost.

The business owner kept eight of the more feral cats on the property as Vermin Patrol, where they have access to food, water, and shelter. The friendlier cats were relocated to new homes, with three going to live with Robin, one of our volunteer trappers who had recently moved to Victoria.

One of those cats Robin so kindly gave a home to, Merlin, had a huge red polyp in his left ear, which was surgically removed on November 9th by a local vet.

Well, now the polyp has returned and it’s deeper in his ear– near his ear drum. The polyp is scary to look at! Poor Merlin!

A specialist vet had to be consulted. Mid-July, Merlin had a CT scan and now is scheduled for surgery on July 27, 2022. The vet will biopsy the polyp after removal. This surgery is going to cost about $4,000, beyond Robin’s financial means to help him.

Bastrop C.A.T.S. is going to post a fundraiser for Merlin on our social media to help Robin pay for the medical attention. Merlin is a sweet, friendly cat and deserves a chance at a normal life! He’s only two or three years old, and we want to give him a chance at a long, biscuits-making, lap-napping life!

We need you to help, if you can, by donating and sharing his post on social media or this story via email to your friends.

When lots of people in the community join together, even with small donations of $5-20, it adds up, and we create miracles! Please help Merlin have his miracle.
