One weekend last fall, a lost kitty Facebook post caught the attention of one of our awesome cat team volunteers. Launa gathered up a trap, bait, cover, and other supplies to go see how she could help.
Despite several neighbors sighting the frightened, lost kitty, Luna, by the time Launa got there, there was only a passel of raccoons milling about. Not wanting to feed the raccoons, Launa left.
Later that night, Launa was back, setting her trap, waiting. Alas, she only caught a non-target black cat that had a friend, a tabby kitty, hanging around, too, waiting for some yummy bait food.
When Launa came back at sundown the next day, she found a ginger boy wearing a collar and had to wait for him to mosey on. She saw a pretty kitty that looked like Luna hanging around but acting shy or scared. Crossing her fingers, Launa set the trap and left for half an hour. When Launa came back, she saw the trap had sprung! However, it wasn’t Luna… it was a momma raccoon, her babies milling around and everyone very unhappy.
Can you see the momma raccoon’s tail poking out in this picture?
Launa tried unsuccessfully several more times that night to catch Luna, but all she caught were a bunch of fire ants. Yikes!
The next night, afraid of more disappointment, Launa was completely surprised when Luna just wandered up to her, letting Launa pick her up! What a contrary cat!
Luna’s owners were so very happy and relieved to get a call on how to reclaim their Luna!
At Bastrop C.A.T.S., we love these kind of happy tale (or should we say TAIL) stories that feature one of our hardworking volunteers as the hero. Launa has such patience and perseverance, and it paid off– Luna got to go home!
