Last Sunday, Bastrop C.A.T.S. received two urgent stray cat emergencies within an hour of each other, in different towns within the county, both male cats with broken legs!
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of four volunteers, both cats were trapped, one Sunday night and one Monday morning. A quick text with Dr. Finch of Fayette County Vet, secured us an emergency appointment early Monday morning for both boys.
Both kitties had really old injuries, 3-4 weeks, dead bones sticking out old. They must’ve been in pain all that time. So glad for our two good sams who brought these guys to our attention and sought help on their behalf. Vet said there was too much dead tissue to try and save their legs. Amputation would be required for them to have quality of life. Teegan lost his left rear leg and Teddy lost his left front leg.
The good news! Both Teegan and Teddy are in foster care with the same foster mom right now. They are now also neutered and vaccinated and recovering very well. Both are eating, drinking water, and using their litter boxes.
Two days post surgery, Foster Mom Terri says this about them both: “T & T are doing very well! Both got their meds, eating, drinking, peeing, and Teddy has pooped, so far. Both got lots of pets and were held this morning. Teegan loves to be held and moves around more. He wants to be petted constantly! Teddy will heavily lean into any petting hand and asks to be picked up!”
An email plea is going out to rescues for these super sweet kitties. Paws crossed they will get scooped up for their adoption program!

Bastrop C.A.T.S. is a growing organization. We TNR thousands of community cats and help stray and feral injured or sick cats. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit completely run by volunteers!
We need more people to volunteer to help us, so we can HELP MORE CATS and expand our outreach to help more people in our community.
Volunteer Tasks:
TNR ASSISTANT helps elderly or disabled people in our community to trap the cats they are feeding. This is the perfect volunteer opportunity for those of you who have already brought your own community cats in for TNR. You have experience! There are probably several people in your neighborhood who would be appreciative of your help to TNR their colonies. Do a few of these, get really proficient at it and we will even give you a title of TNR PROJECT MANAGER. How cool is that!?
TRANSPORT CATS in traps to TNR clinics OR sick/injured cats/kittens in carriers to vet appointments OR to transfer to Austin Humane Society or Austin Pets Alive, both of whom help us by taking hundreds of cats and kittens into their adoption programs. Love cats? Have a couple hours and a vehicle? Here’s your easy volunteer gig.
TNR CLINIC CHECK IN takes about 30 minutes to one hour. One morning a week. Show up on time. Weighing traps with cats, putting tags on traps, and a little bit of paperwork. Super easy!
OFFSITE FOSTER is a new program just starting. We plan to have an off-site foster kitten nursery very soon. We will need four volunteers every day: two in the morning and two in the evening to feed, clean, litter boxes, etc. Bonus: Playing with kittens! And fostering without having to hassle those uncooperative spouses or upsetting your own cats and dogs. You know, the ones that do not welcome newbies? Kitten cuddling and jelly bean toe kissing without the commitment! The best!
