Keeping Kitties Warm

By TerrieLynn Bach

On these cold winter nights, do you ever watch your indoor kitties enjoying their blankets and beds in your nice warm house and feel for the kitties who live outdoors, wishing they, too, had a warm place to sleep?

Consider making some feral cat shelters!

Our TNR Coordinator Martha recently built a couple of feral cat shelters and put them near one of the local community cat feeding locations. She had gone out there a few days ago to assess the situation for a TNR site only to have one of the kitties try to climb into her car. There are several mommas with 4-month-old babies out there. Martha’s making them a Double Wide so they can stay together!

Making cat shelters is fairly easy for most DIY people thanks to YouTube:

Remember to only use straw, not blankets or hay for insulation. Straw is available and sold as bedding material in feed stores.

If anyone would like to have a styrofoam box with a lid for making a cat shelter, I have about six I’ve saved and would donate to this project. Email me at TerrieLynn@BastropCats.org to start your project!

And if you’re feeling crafty but don’t have a community cat living near you, let us know! We will be sure they are located in a safe area where community cats will have access to them. Meowy Thanks!
